The University of Alcala is one of the oldest universities in Europe and has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Located just 30 kilometers from Madrid, University of Alcala has three campuses: one in the historical centre, one in the exterior of the city -with a large student's residence- and the last one in the city of Guadalajara (Spain). With over 28,000 students, the University offers over 35 grade official qualifications and other postgraduate studies. Moreover, the university has created different institutions like the Instituto Franklin (for investigation in North American studies) or Alcalingua (for the learning of the Spanish language by foreign students).

The SDSU Exchange program with Alcala is only for Spanish graduate students
. Students must be enrolled full-time, which is 18 ECTS (European credits). 2 ECTS equal 1 SDSU unit.
Participants take two or three classes at Alcala to equal 18 ECTS.
All courses taught in Spanish
Students must possess advanced Spanish skills or equivalent (not including courses taken in high school) All applicants must meet the language prerequisites by the end of the semester prior to departure.
Heritage speakers of Spanish can have a Language Proficiency Recommendation Report completed by the Spanish department in the Aztecs Abroad application to verify language ability.

Housing and Meals
Most exchange students who go to Alcalá de Henares live in affordable university residencies, apartments or with a host family (a private room in a family home).
All SDSU students will be automatically enrolled in the appropriate international health insurance for their study abroad term. The insurance charge will appear on your student account services billing shortly before departure. Students will receive more detailed instructions regarding insurance before departure.
All U.S. citizens studying in Spain are required to apply for a visa. Please see the Consulate General of Spain in Los Angeles
website for more information. It is recommended students schedule an appointment at the Spanish Consulate
even before receiving their official nomination in October or March depending on term.
