Location Summary
Jakarta is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Indonesia and the twelfth-largest city in the world. The metropolitan area, Jabodetabek, is now the second largest in the world and home to over 10 million people, as well as skyscrapers, single story residential houses, modern apartment complexes and survivalists' shanties-all coexist in this city. As the country's economic, cultural and political center, Jakarta is always bustling. The city is also the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat.
Jakarta has its own special Betawi culture, although the city has been influenced by various other cultures that have reached its shores over the centuries. The region hosts a range of breathtaking natural and man-made wonders and Jakarta is a gastronomic paradise for gourmets, with international and local cuisines galore. Shopping in Jakarta is colorful and varied, as options range from street markets and independent enterprises to high-end shopping towns catering to those interested in luxury goods.
