University Profile

The University of Pécs, founded in 1367, is the oldest and one of the largest research universities in Hungary. With ten schools and 20,000 students, the University plays a significant role in Hungarian higher education. It is a truly international university in the heart of Central and Eastern Europe with our first English-taught degree program launched over 30 years ago.

The University offers a broad range of training and degree programmes, ensuring high-level knowledge-transfer and research. In addition, the University attaches great importance to training in the colleges for advanced studies. Nearly every Faculty offers training in the framework of this organization that encourages students to pursue their own research. The University continuously works on expanding and improving its co-operation with other universities and international research institutions and is already part of a large network at different levels.

The University of Pécs offers more than 40 degree programs taught in English with more than 3,000 international students. Twice it earned the Erasmus Quality Award and most recently the national award for "Internationalizing Higher Education". The University of Pécs joined the IIE Generation Study Abroad program with the aim of providing American students with an ideal study abroad destination offering high quality education and services.

Hints for Researching Program and Available Courses
See the University of Pécs Student Exchanges Incoming webpage and scroll down to Available Courses.  Look very closely at the "Language of Instruction" indicated for any course of interest.
At University of Pecs, courses are coded in a 5 digit format (XXXXX) where the second digit represents the level. SDSU considers courses listed X2XXX or above as upper division.

Housing and Meals
International students have two basic housing options, on-campus residence hall or private apartment.  The University of Pécs will reserve very affordable on-campus housing or the student can locate off-campus housing upon arrival.  The International Relations Office and The Central Student Service Bureau (Központi Szolgáltató Iroda - KÖSZI) can be of help in finding rooms or apartments off campus.

As for meals, there are inexpensive student cafeterias at most of the schools and faculties that are offering daily menus for students and staff members.  Elsewhere in the city there are a great variety of restaurants that are also offering daily menus.  Fast food options and international cuisine are also available besides the traditional Hungarian cuisine.

Insurance Requirement
All SDSU students will be automatically enrolled in the appropriate international health insurance for their study abroad term. The insurance charge will appear on your student account services billing shortly before departure. Students will receive more detailed instructions regarding insurance before departure.

For more information about entry/exit requirements for your host country, visit the U.S. Department of State website.
