University Profile
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (also known as HAW Hamburg) in Germany offers a wide range of interesting programs in engineering, life sciences, business, computer science, design, media and social sciences. A number of these programs have classes in English, so language does not have to be a barrier. Located in Hamburg, which is Europe's "greenest city" and Germany's second largest city, Hamburg University helps students excellent quality of life and international flair.

Applicants must have completed the Intermediate level of German (or equivalent) in order to enroll in subjects taught in German.
For students who would like to study one or two semesters in Germany, but speak only a little or no German there are a few semester programmes in English or where German is not required. SDSU students can participate on programs that are open to exchange students.

We are very happy to announce that we have new modules in English in nursing and healthcare.
They can be combined with courses in Social Work.


Program Dates
Fall semester is called Winter and the Spring semester is called Summer due to different academic calendar.  Students are encouraged to go to Hamburg during the spring or full academic year.  Fall semester only is possible for certain subjects with early exams in January.

Semester 1: Early September to Late February
Semester 2: Mid March to Early July

See the HAW Hamburg Study Abroad Office webpage, select the link for "Programmes in English", select your area of interest from the left side of the screen, and download the "module handbook" for lists of courses and their descriptions. Courses in German are available at the same link, above.

Housing and Meals
Limited on-campus accommodation is available.  However, priority is given to students from overseas and the rooms are awarded on a first come, first serve basis.  Significant off-campus housing is available also.  More details can be found on the HAW Hamburg Housing for Guest Students webpage.

Insurance Requirement
All SDSU students will be automatically enrolled in the appropriate international health insurance for their study abroad term. The insurance charge will appear on your student account services billing shortly before departure. Students will receive more detailed instructions regarding insurance before departure.
