University Profile
The University of Sunderland is a highly-respected UK university that combines academic excellence with fantastic student support and pastoral care. As you would expect from a university that has been providing education since 1901, we offer a rich and high-quality education and facilities that are among the best in the United Kingdom. We're proud to be an innovative, accessible and inspirational university.

The origins of higher education in Sunderland can be traced back to 1860 when the School of Science and Art was founded. Over the years, various mergers took place increasing the size of the institution. The award of university status coincided with the designation of Sunderland as Britain 's newest city. The University of Sunderland has more than 15,000 students, and welcomes over 1,000 international students from nearly 60 countries.

The university's facilities are amongst the best in the UK. The university has two 24/7 libraries, a 70 station fitness suite, indoor climbing wall, a cinema, two TV studios, five radio studios as well as our own radio station!

Location Summary
Sunderland is a coastal city located in Northeast England facing the North Sea and lying at the mouth of the River Wear. With endless sands and miles of beautiful coastline, Sunderland’s Seaburn and Roker beaches and their long promenades are ideal for summer walks and taking in the raw beauty of the North East.

University of Sunderland CitySunderland has the perfect combination of city and seaside living and is a friendly, diverse and affordable place for you to live and study. The University is split over two campuses, one located on the river, St Peter's Campus and a city centre campus, City Campus.

There’s something to suit all tastes and budgets in Sunderland. You’ll find high street favourites in The Bridges Shopping Centre, the beautiful Mowbray Park, an international-class airshow, the award-winning National Glass Centre, the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art and achingly-cool independent venues such as Frankie and the Heartstrings’ Pop Recs – a record shop, art space and live music venue.

Faculty of Health and Wellbeing
Faculty of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing

Hints for Researching Program and Available Courses
Access the Module Guide on the Sunderland Incoming Students webpage to review the modules available to incoming study abroad students.

One 20 credit Sunderland module is equivalent to 5 SDSU semester units.  Three modules (60 credits) is a full semester load and six modules (120 credits) is a full academic
year load.  Generally students take 3 modules per semester for a total of 60 credits.

All students should discuss module descriptions with their SDSU academic advisors early.  Be aware prerequisites for modules/classes in the UK are taken very seriously and students mostly enroll in Year 2 modules if they need upper-division credit.

Note: At University of Sunderland, SDSU considers (Year 2) 200+ level courses as upper-division.
Housing and Meals
University housing is available for all study abroad and exchange students.  See the Sunderland Accommodation website for more details.
