Living is safe, clean, modern and comfortable, including 24/7 gated security, housekeeping, and a live-in local coordinator.

Internship Details

In Tanzania, a high infant mortality rate has led the government to prioritize efforts to ensure that babies are being delivered safely and mothers are provided with adequate care and support. Women who live in under-developed rural areas are considered especially at risk, due to restricted access to healthcare facilities. As a midwifery intern, you’ll assist alongside local midwives and medical professionals in all aspects of their service provision for new and expectant mothers, building trusting relationships that foster safe births and healthy babies.

This internship provides an exciting chance to gain practical skills for your career, learning from qualified professionals and experiencing the daily routines of midwives in Tanzania. You’ll gain experience in antenatal classes, maternity and delivery wards, observing and assisting local midwives as they go about day-to-day tasks. Midwifery interns learn about proper pre-birthing techniques and how to teach them to groups and individual mothers. You’ll also gain an understanding of treatment for conditions such as obstetric hemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labor and infections.

Interns are able to gain experience providing care before, during and after childbirth. However, it’s important to understand that your ability to be present during births will depend on your demonstrated expertise and the extent of your observation, and participation will be at the discretion of the mother. If you are able to experience a birth, you should expect to simply be assisting your supervisor in a hands-off role.
